In a perfectcly meritocratic society we would imagine that those who provide the most value have the most attention/rewards. The most valuable instagram account has the bigger follower count, the student who did the most for her community will get the best chances for a dream gig. Value being defined as something that help individuals, and a result the humankind, advance towards a better life/world.
Well, this is not a perfect society and most of us give our attention to BS media which either helps us forget the rat race or helps “live“ a better life through the lens of other people’s smartphones. We tolerate mediocre content that is good enough to help us forget ourselves and must**8 our brains into temporary pleasure bursts.
This is not a meritocratic society.
